14. Cathedral in Cholula zocalo (“center”). Center of colonial architecture, Cholula is said to have a church for every day of the year. Though there may not be quite that many, it does seem that the eye cannot move without falling on several at one time. Their numbers are probably due to the fact that during pre-Conquest times there were hundreds of Indian shrines and temples in the area, which the Spaniards offset with Christian structures. The cathedral is called the Franciscan convent of St. Gabriel.
