59. Mitla - “house tomb.” These were once highly elaborate “house tombs” used for the burial of Zapotec high priests. The cross-shaped tombs were found under the galleries -- these were obviously collective graves for priests who were buried here one after the other. Part of the roof was supported by a monolithic column, popularly nicknamed the Column of Life. It is said that if one embraces it, one will find out how many years are left of one’s existence.
