Scout tackles trash in creek
Hayward teen cleans his way to Eagle rank
FROM STAFF REPORTS

HAYWARD — Even as a little boy, Brett Long was troubled by trash and debris he'd see while exploring Ward Creek around the Wallace Wickander Memorial Trail. "Our house is located on the ridge right next to the canyon, so I would go down there all the time," he said. "The trash bothered me."

So when it came time to choose a community service project for his Boy Scout Eagle award, Long went with something close to home. A car body, water heater, washing machine and tractor tire were just some of items Long and a team of about 35 volunteers found last spring during a creek cleanup he coordinated.

Now, having just received his Eagle award, he said he can go down to the creek and immerse himself in nature without the distractions of human debris. "I feel a sense of renewal that the canyon is back to its original state," he said.

Long, 16, a sophomore at Moreau Catholic High School, received his Eagle award on Feb. 26 during a ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church of Hayward. About 130 guests attended, including City Councilman Bill Quirk and Alameda County Supervisor Gail Steele. Fewer than one in 20 scouts advance to the Eagle rank.

In addition to his community service project, Long completed 34 merit badges, 13 more than required for the Eagle rank. He also has held various leadership positions in Hayward Troop 807.

Long recruited his entire baseball team and some football players to help with the cleanup. Moreau requires its students to put in community service hours, he said.

Other agencies that participated or made donations for the cleanup include Waste Management, Hayward Area Recreation and Parks District, and providers of food and a portable toilet.

As for parents Loren and Margie Long, they said their son's accomplishment was completely his own. "We were so proud of him," Margie Long said. "Brett did everything. He's very self-motivated."

True to its name, the event had an old-fashioned, small-town feeling to it. Families of many backgrounds picnicked on the park's grass, reflecting well the ethnic diversity of Alameda County.
Seniors dodged little children who seemed to be running forever to and fro between a face-painting booth, a nearby swing set and their parents. Members of Boy Scout Troop 726 of Castro Valley staffed the game booths , which awarded tickets that could be traded in for prizes, such as stuffed animals, flag pins and toy cars.

Tiger Cubs From Cub Scout Pack #703 Help Out at Food Pantry

Tiger Cubs from Cub Scout Pack #703 in Castro Valley recently helped Faith Lutheran Church restock the Food Pantry. The Church recently received items from the May 2003 Mail Carriers Food Drive, which will be distributed to various nonprofit organizations who feed members of our community. Faith Lutheran Church alone feeds a minimum of 18 families per week a 2 day supply of food each. Last year 833 families were fed from the Faith Lutheran Church Food Pantry. Families are referred by various agencies in the community to receive food each week and volunteers from the church box up supplies to be distributed to the families.
