GNU/Linux & GPRS Howto

Now the simple setup procedure.. On this GUI click

configure

or press 'n'
You will be presented with this GUI and here you will have to create a account.

That is !

Your Internet Service Provider's Details.


Click new..
 
 
Step 1.
Step 2.
 
There are three entries needed here

1.
In the 'Connection Name' Dialog type any name you prefer to call this connection

       Where I have used the name "My Connection"

2.
In the authentication dialog click scroll and select "PAP"since most GPRS connections dont need passwords

3.
For the Phone Number click Add and enter the GPRS (ISP) Number
Which will be either  *99**1*1# or *99*1*1# or maybe something similar.
check with your Service provider
Step 3.
Here Only 'ONE' entry

In The Domain name Box Add your ISP Server Name

Which will be     " Something.com"

If you are not sure find out from your Internet Service Provider.


Also the Configuration dialog should be left at "Automatic" not manual.
If it's left in manual position you may get connected but you will not be able to access internet.
Your Browser will report " DNS Error"

(Ps:  If you are not able to click Automatic here, Please start KPPP as root )

Now Press the 'OK' button



Step 4.
 
Now your phone dialer settings are done the Next thing is setting yor phone as Modem







Now click the 'Modems' Tab


And Click New


and DEVICE tab
 
Modem Name        : Anything you like

Modem Device        : If Serial ( COM 0) should read
                                /dev/ttyS0

Flow control        : Hardware (CRTSCTS)

Line termination  : CR


Connection speed should be 115200 not more not less
because most GPRS phones are preset at that speed.
if you change the speed which the phone dose'nt support the Modem will not respond.

Dont change anything else
 
Click Modem tab


Here you dont have to do anything except untick the

'wait for dial tone' or press W

Thats it !!!

now click OK.



Now you will back to the Connect Screen

Here you enter your Mobile Number in the Login ID dialog box



Congratulation now you are almost done..

You must be eager to CONNECT Please wait there are
Two more small steps before you can press the CONNECT button.
Now open a Konsole window (terminal)
su:
password:*********

now type

# kwrite /etc/ppp/options

       wait till the text editor open
       and then type into.. exactly as written in blue.

       /dev/ttyS0
       115200
       noauth
       noipdefault
       nodetach
       local
       usepeerdns
       ipcp-accept-local
       lcp-echo-failure 30
       lcp-echo-interval 4
       lock

       save file and exit.
       and next in the Konsole window type

# kwrite /etc/resolv.conf

       wait till the editor open
       and type nothing, just savefile and exit
       if it says file exists asks whether to overwrite press skip

Thats it now CONNECT and ENJOY the World Wide Web

Any Distro (Fedora, Kubuntu,Mandrake, Debian, etc..etc..)would do..
Now click the menu button select internet and then dialup tool (KPPP)
You will be presented with a GUI ( Graphic User Interface) like the one shown below.
Linux is a powerfull operating system even on the SOHO (Small Office Home Office) front, where the  potential is much more than we could imagine only if its used the right way.
Especially it has been proven to be the.. reliable soft in the server front even then I had a tough time to figure out howto connect my GPRS cellular phone thru serial cable with my Laptop running Linux OS to browse the web on the move.
Finally after months of fiddling and reinstalling the same OS again and again since I was playing as God (I meant as user root)

at last It just turned out to be a simple setup without any pain or whatsoever.

Please take your time and understand the steps provided below ....
