BETHESDA NAVAL HOSPITAL
1005 HOURS
Mac walks down the corridor towards Harm's hospital
room. As she is about to enter the room, she comes face to
face with Jordan who quickly attempts to dry away the tears that are slipping
down her cheeks.
MAC
(noticing Jordon's demeanor)
Jordan.........Is everything ok?
JORDAN
(bitterly through the tears)
For me,....no........but for you......well, let's just say
I've let Harm off the hook! So, ........I guess that makes him all
yours now, doesn't it!
Jordan pushes her way past Mac and hastily walks off
down the corridor. Mac gazes toward Harm in total
bewilderment.
MAC
(as she walks towards Harm's bedside)
What was that all about, Harm?
HARM
Well,.....apparently she's under the impression that I'm in
love with another woman.
MAC
(laughs nervously)
Who?.........Me?........You're kidding, right?
Harm observes Mac closely for a long moment as her face
flushes red with embarrassment and she attempts to jokingly brush it all
off.
HARM
Well, I'm afraid that Jordan wasn't kidding, Mac!....In fact,
she's so convinced that it's the truth that she's broken off our
relationship.
MAC
(her smile vanishing)
Harm, I'm so sorry!
HARM
(gazing intently into her eyes)
Are you, Mac?
At that moment, Ensign Salyer enters the room and approaches
Harm and Mac.
SALYER
(gazing to his watch and then back to Harm &
Mac)
I am really sorry to interrupt,... ma'am.......sir,....... but
I've got a strict schedule to keep and according to that schedule, sir,
you and I should have been down in physical therapy ten minutes
ago!
MAC
Well then, Ensign, you had better get to it!..(drawing closer
to Harm)......I've really got to get back to JAG anyway!.........(touching his
hand) You take care!

INT
JAG CONFERENCE ROOM
1242
Mac, Imes and Mattoni are seated
around the conference table already in the midst of taking Mac's testimony for
the upcoming Article 32 hearing. Mac is obviously somewhat agitated from
the interview as is Imes.........Mattoni maintaining a calmer demeanor than his
counterparts.
IMES
Colonel, with what you're giving us, we really
don't have a very strong case!
MAC
Strong enough to bring Peterson to a full court
martial.
IMES
I agree, but getting a conviction is another
matter.
MATONI
Well, let's cross that bridge when we come to it,
Commander! (gazing to Mac) In the meantime, I
think we really need to go over everything one more time. Maybe it will
help to jog your memory.
Mac irritably gazes to Mattoni no words needing to be said to
express the deep anguish and frustration she's feeling.
MAC
(sighs deeply)
I went home with Captain Peterson that night..... making a
stop at Malcolms.
MATTONI
(interrupting)
Did you see what the Captain purchased from
Malcolms?
MAC
Just that the top of the bottle. It
was wrapped in a brown paper bag.
MATTONI
Did he take it up with him to your
apartment?
MAC
No!.....
MATTONI
Go on, Colonel.
MAC
On our way in, he started complaining of a headache and asked
if I had anything for it. So, I let him inside ...offered him the aspirin
he had requested and even invited him to a cup of coffee........
MATTONI
So, what the two of you drank was coffee, not
alcohol?
MAC
It was coffee, Commander!
MATTONI
Did you have a cup as well?
MAC
Yes!
MATTONI
And do you remember ever leaving your cup unattended for any
reason?
MAC
Only once when Peterson asked for a second cup of
coffee.
IMES
Umm.... I hate to bring this up, but we already know that test
results are inconclusive for date rape drugs, so why go there?
MATTONI
The tests were inconclusive, Carolyn, not negative,..... and
if we are going to find a way to argue this case, we need to know every detail
possible.
MAC
I think you could have something there, Commander,
because I can remember feeling very tired after that where before I had
been on edge .........and.......it's in that same time frame where my
memories seem to become vague and fragmented.
MATTONI
Then it must have been when
he slipped something into your coffee, Mac!
Mac eyes meet Mattoni's. She then stands
and walks away from the table her anxiety showing through as she attempts to
sort through the memories of that night. There is a long pause of silence in the room as Imes and Mattoni consider
Mac's testimony.
IMES
You're an attorney, Sarah, so you've got to know that this
case is basically your word against his. It's going to be very hard
to get a conviction.
MAC
(reaching the window and gazing out)
I'm well aware of that, Carolyn. (she pauses
starring out the window) What I want to know is, do you believe
me?
IMES
In all honesty, Sarah, I don't believe you would be putting
yourself through this if it weren't anything but the truth.
MAC
Well, thanks for your vote of confidence, Carolyn. (she
pauses as she turns from the window to meet Imes's gaze) I am
going to need a strong advocate in that court room on Friday and if for one
moment either of you have any doubts in regards to my honesty or my integrity
then I expect to know about it before I agree to your counsel.
Mottoni and Imes consider her words carefully for a long
moment.
MATTONI
Well, Colonel, considering the
manner in which this man violated you, I have every intention of nailing the
bastards ass to the wall!
Mac and Imes are taken aback by Mattoni's sudden passion for
justice and gaze to him in unison.
IMES
Well, Commander, you're attitude is compelling! (she
turns to Mac) And as it is reflective of my sentiments, I guess you
will have two passionate advocates in your court on Friday, Mac!
Mac gazes to each of the attorney's standing before her
wishing all too well that they were as confident as they tried to pretend to
be. Her very life and career placed in their hands Mac felt uneasy at
best.
