Arising during the Ice Age, about a million years ago, wolves roamed across England, Europe and America. By the 14th century, their numbers in England and Europe had diminished greatly, having been greatly hunted for hundreds of years. They were killed partly out of man's fear of this majestic wild beast, but largely due to the bounty offered for wolf pelts in early medieval times. England's wolf population became non-existent.
Thankfully, times have changed and we no longer fear the wolf as our ancestors did. In these enlightened times, man has come to realise the important part the wolf plays in nature, and so steps have been taken to ensure the creature's survival.
