Effective Study Habits

-Develop a study plan and use it.

-Make the most of the time you have to studdy - This does not mean making more to  study.

-Plan Ahead

-Study difficult subjects first - You have  more energy - Save your easier subjects for later.


Study Hints

-Use a quiet study area and study alone.

-Study at the same time every day.

-Avoid noise and distractions -Ask friends//family member to not disturb you and your habits.

-Learn to say NO to distractions.

-Be prepared and organized to study.


Test Taking Techniques

-Preparation: Keep up with assignments.     
                   
                   Study assignments regularly.
                    
                    Save notes, all graded work, etc.

                      DO NOT CRAM!
-Review:

	Daily- Short reviews of lecture notes, and material just learned.

	Weekly- Includes review of reading assignments and questions from text.

-Predict Test Questions.

-Arrive early

-Scan entire test first

-Read directions slowly and carefully

-Reread as nessacary

-Use Margins for memory aids.

-Answer easiest questions first 

-Save hard questions for last.

Other Test Taking Hints

-Don’t change answers quickly - Usually firrst answer is correct.

-Look for answers in other questions.

-Mark answer sheet correctly

-Don’t leave blanks on completion questionss.

-Matching Answers:

			-eliminate obviously wrong answers and match easy choices first.

-For True/False questions, guess if there iis no heavy penalty

-Be brief but address main points effectiveely

-Be clear and concise- Don’t use “Big” wordds to impress readers.

First Aid
-Check, Call, Care
-Two types of injury:
	Soft tissue,
	muscle, bone and joint
-3 types of burns
	1st degree -least amount, sunburn, reddish color
	2nd degree- down to muscle, blisters
	3rd degree- cooked skin, blackish, down to bone
-Stop the burning
Cool burn with cool water
Cover with clean, dry dressing
-Muscle can be sprained
Bones can be broken
Joints can be sprained or broken
-Rest, Ice, and Elevation
-Shock CAN kill
	restlessness or irritability
	change in consciousness
	skin pale, cool, moist.
-Internal bleeding, -soft, hard, cool, moisst, bluish color, vomiting/coughing up blood
-Bleeding:
	pressure
	bandage OVER bandage
	elevate
	pressure points:
		2 in upper inner arm
		2 in upper thigh where the hip bends
	apply tourniquet as a last resort, and then 1-3 inches above bleeding because you 
will lose everything below it
-Splints
	anatomical- to another part of the body (finger to finger, leg to leg, NOT arm to arm, 
but arm to chest)
	Rigid- wood, metal, plastic, when dealing with hands insert soft gauze into fingers 
to keep the natural shape
-Injury to bone
	immobilize the joints above and below the bone
-Injury to Joint
	immobilize bones above and below the joint
-Broken: Support the injured area
-check for feeling warmth and color
-splint and then recheck for feeling warmthh and color.
First Aid Notes Continued
-CPR, infant
	airway open, fingers positioned in the center of the back bone, below nipple.
	5 one inch compressions every three seconds
	give one slow breath
	check for pulse and breathing every minute
	continue until unable to continue/someone takes over
-Preventing Childhood Injuries
	understand relationship between development and environment.
	remove dangers
	give supervision
	teach safety
	Auto vehicles are the leading cause of childhood death/.
-Abdominal thrusts on an unconscious child
	retilt the head, and breathe
	straddle legs and position hands in the middle of the abdomen, above the navel
	after thrusting, look for the object
	sweep out the mouth
	give breathes
	repeat until the breaths go in, the child begins to breath on their own, or 
until someone takes over.
-CPR for child
	hand position on the chest, compress the chest 1 and a half inches five times 
before giving one slow breath
	check the pulse at one minute, check for 5 seconds.
	continues until pulse is found, you are too tired to go on, or a relive worker
 comes
-Back Blows and Chest thrusts
	If an infant is chocking, position face down, with their chest on your knee.
	Give 5 back blows
	Turn over, supporting the head and neck
	give five chest thrusts below the nipples
-Rescue Breathing
	Give two slow breaths, sealing the mouth around the infants mouth and nose, and 
check for pulse and breathing
	Give one slow breath every 3 seconds
	recheck for pulse and breathing about every minute
	On an infant, check for the pulse in the upper arm for 5 seconds
-Back Blows and Chest Thrusts for Unconscioous Infant
	retilt head and rebreathe
	turn infant over, chest on forearm, forearm on thigh
	give five back blows between the shoulder blades

-Back Thrusts and Chest thrusts for an Uncoonscious Infant continued
	Open the jaw and look for object
	If you can see it, fish it out, before retitling head and breathing again.
	Repeat until breathing or until someone takes over
-500,000 people die of a heart attack withiin two hours of the fist sign
-Signs include uncomfortable pressure or paain behind the breast bone, closer to the back 
for women, nausea, shortness of breath, and sweating.
-CPR
	Locate notch at lower end of breast bone
	place hands over this notch, hand over hand
	press down with the heel of your hands firmly 15 times, compressing the chest 
about two inches
	tilt head and breath every then seconds
	Check for pulse and breathing every few minutes
-Arteries go away from the heart and pump oout bright red blood.
-Veins flow out with a dark, purplish bloodd
