So you want to be a Lawyer.........

Like most people, when hearing the word Lawyer, you automatically think of
the sleazy ones that are only out to take your money, and will prolong everything
as long as they can. Now who wouldn’t want to be some one like this? Seriously,
there are sleazy lawyers, but there are also those who are only in it to make sure
that you are well taken care of. Its up to you which one you would like to be, and no
one else can make that choice for you.

Lawyers do many things. They Conduct cases in courts of law, interview
clients and witnesses, evaluate findings, study the constitution, prepare
legal documents, act as a trustee or a guardian, and present evidence. Now you may
be saying to yourselves, so what, I mean, if the people on TV can do it, why can’t I?
Well, to be a REAL lawyer, you must have a Doctoral degree, which is equivalent to
completing seven (7) years of after high school schooling. Not to mention passing all
these tests like the Bar Exam.

As in most things, there are different types of lawyers. These types include
Tax Attorney, Criminal Lawyer, Law Clerks, and District Attorney’s. They each specialize
in their own field, although they have some knowledge of the other fields in their category.
In each of these jobs however, you will get some transferable work content skills. Some of
these skills are the ability of counseling and advising people, investigating data to
solve problems, and processing data on computers.

You get many skills out of being a lawyer, but you also need certain skills to get in.
Reading comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening skills, critical thinking, learning
strategies, and monitoring skills are all required. A certain level of Math and
Science is needed too, but not as much. Also, this job is physically classified at sedentary,
meaning that you only need to be able to lift ten pounds. Yes, all those law books can get
heavy, but that’s what assistants are for, right?

Now, you’re probably saying that this is all well and good, but how much would I make?
Well, on average here in Florida, you would make $38.71 an hour. The average entry level
annual pay is $45,406. Now then, as you get more experienced, this could increase up to
$123,656 a year.

There are certain drawbacks to all that money though. You’d have irregular hours,
overtime work, and some overnight travel. Of course, you’d still be able to meet new people,
and see new places... even if that included the inside of the jail house, for some of
your clients. Sometimes though, you get involved in your work, and you want your client
to do well, just as much as they do. Its these people that make it worth being a lawyer,
and its these cases that all good lawyers hope for, and occasionally receive. This is the
real reason why I wish do be a lawyer..... what’s yours?
