What's new in the World of Nick?

Since everyone automatically comes to The Nick for paintball and paintball related information, I have created this page to serve as a comparison between Delaware's various paintball fields and shops.  Each field's location, prices, and open times are below.  Following these 'hard facts' are my opinions of the places based on my own experiences.  Trust The Nick.

Paintball Game of Delaware
(Owned by Paintball Actions Games)

Website: www.paintballactiongames.com
Location:  To get to PAG's fields, follow these instructions (you only make three turns!)
-From the place that I work, go from Route 4 to 896.  Make a left.
-Follow all the way up, past the second school (not Glasgow, but Hodgson).
-Make the next right.  It's really curvy.
-Make the very next left.  There should be a constructed/finished church to the left in an open field.
-From here, follow Old County Road a long ways.  After an intersection, you should see a sign for Paintball Game of Delaware.

Prices:
15$ field fees and all day air + paint
                        OR
35$ for complete rental and 200 rounds..

Paintballs are sold in increments of 100, 200, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 (a case).  The best price includes a case which has four packs of 500.  However, sometimes I can get 15$ for a pack of 500 as a special price for my groups.  Otherwise, it's about 17.50, I believe
Case (2,000) - 65$ (note that this has gone down from previous prices)
Drinks - .50 cents each.  You will be buying drinks.

Discouts?: Yes.  It used to be that an Organizer of 15 gets free air and rental.  Groups of 30+ get 10% discounts.  That may or may not be current.
Fields: PAG has three wooded fields (all are excellent and can be combined) and a pretty good speedball field.  Furthermore, good refs who care, enough refs, and good service make this place worth the slightly steep prices.
Hours: Open Saturdays and Sundays, 9 to 6.

I like PAG.  Never had any problems there, although I have issues with their rental guns.  Their fields are big and pretty.  It's evident that most of the people there care and that the fields are properly cared for.  Also, they change up their speedball field pretty often, from what I've seen.  The owner is an entertaining, friendly fellow, making this my favorite field..

OUT OF BUSINESS Delaware Paintball OUT OF BUSINESS

Delaware Paintball has since closed down (read my Rants page to conclude my feelings on this event), but has opened up a new location somewhere else in Delaware. I have no idea where it is, though.  I'll leave up the old information, however, until it is updated.

Location
:  On that highway, Route X, near BJ's Wholesale Club.  You make the left turn at the fork; DE Paintball is on the right side.

Shop?: No shop on the fields, although they do sell Tippman markers.
Prices:
   10$ all day air.
I don't know the field rental fees.

Case (2,000) - varies, but good field paint can be had at 70$.
   Drinks - 1$

Discouts?: Probably... but I'm not sure.
Fields: I've seen DEP's new Sup'Air field (which is better than their old spool 'n barrel field).  Also, I know they have a wooded field somewhere.  Info below.
Hours: I'm not sure of their opening times.  I think weekdays are (at least) 11 - 6, with longer Saturdays and shorter Sundays.

Delaware Paintball is officially on my 'boycott' list.  The first time I played on their speedball field was in 2001(?).  Some crazy guy complained that I 'shot his dog in the eye'.  Needless to say, The Nick does not abuse any dogs but his own.  That accusation left a sour taste for the field, although it was not DEP's fault.  They took good care of me, then.

However, on 20010-10-07, I had a horrific experience.  Read the IotW #7 for the full story.  There are also rumors of 'negative talk' at DEP.  Additionally, my complaint to the two fools running the store at the time practically fell on deaf ears.  "You'll have to take it up with the field manager."  By that, I would suppose you either meant the guy who should be working on the field or the actual owner (both of whom were not present).

A brief side-note; I'll never complain about reffing again.  It's hard and tireless.  I reffed a game or two.  (The other side of this argument is that one of the players had to ref.  Maybe it was just an off-day, but DEP needs to get it together.)

I'll give a visit there sometime soon; if the owner treats me nicely, I'll call of this crazy boycott of mine.  But cross The Nick and suffer economic ruin!

ECX Paintball Park
Location:  301 Ruthar Drive
                Newark, De. 19711
Ruthar Drive is right off the road near Astro Plaza near Christiana Mall.  Turn near the McDonald's/gas station/Season's Pizza.  The field's on the right, behind some small brick corporate building (you'll see the netting).
Shop?: The above address is the actual field.  They are associated with Newport Paintball and Skate.
Check the Newport Paintball and Skate website.  It's a good shop, although some of the prices are a bit on the pricy side (in my opinion).
.
Prices:
   10$ all day field pass.
   10$ rental.  (New semi-auto rentals)

   100 rounds, 5$
   200 rounds, 10$
   500 rounds, 25$
   1,000 rounds, 40$
2,000 case, 75$        (Essentially, look for discounts in the 1,000 and 2,000 ball range.  Buy in bulk!)

Discouts?: Yes!  Best I've seen; 10% off for groups of 10 or more (reservation required).
Fields: I've only seen their Ultimate Air and Hyper Ball field.  Check out these pix of their field...

Here are the stats (I got these off a flyer)
15,000 sq ft. Hyper Ball Field.
22,000 sq. ft. Ultimate Air-Ball Field.
25000 sq. ft. Wooded "Jungle" Field
Hours: Newport's hours are on the website; EXC PB Park's house are Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
However, Saturday is for reserved groups of 10+ while Sunday is for walk-on play.

Email from the owner/webmaster Mike at stated this: "We will meet or BEAT any local competitors prices on any in stock item."  Now that's good!  So far, these guys look to be the best and they haven't done anything to make The Nick have a bad day.  I'm going to try and give these guys some more business.

I like the looks of their fields.  Unfortunately, except for a quick Thursday visit to look at the grounds, I've never seen nor played on the EXC fields.  Also, I haven't seen the "Jungle" field.  However, I can say that the Air-Ball field looks cool.  I didn't look at the Hyper-Ball setup (well, I did look at it, but it was flat).

My initial impression is very good.  The prices are standard Delaware prices, but the parking and layout of the spectator/preparation area looks excellent and professional.  Also, there is a specific "Goggles On" area before you even get onto the field.  Frankly, I'm sick of telling people to 'Put your mask down' at least twice a day... it's not even my job!

I'm not sure if these are the same for the field.

Robin Hood paintball is about half an hour from Fox Run.  That's a bit of a drive, but nothing too bad.  I hear it's excellent from Dan.  Also, I wrote an email to the owner, Rick, and he answered EVERY SINGLE QUESTION of mine.  And I asked a lot of questions.  That's customer service.

Also, I should apologize because I complained his email system on the website wasn't working when it really was my computer.  The Nick can be a whiner sometimes.

Anyway, thanx goes to Rick because he answered so many of my questions.  From what Dan has told me in addition to what I can tell from the email, I think Robin Hood just might be one of the best places around.
