Feable Weiner, Dear Hot Chick
Doghouse Records, 2003

First off, I can’t go anywhere until I discuss this band’s name. It’s bad. Bad bad bad. They’re might be some hidden meaning, or a reason why the word “feeble” is spelled incorrectly, but all that aside it’s a bad name for the simple reason that it automatically makes you think that the band can’t be taken seriously. Then again, that might be the point after all; these guys don’t really to be looking for real critical acclaim, more so seeking to make fun songs that folks can dance around to and forget their problems for a while. All that aside, any band name that makes you giggle whenever you see it is probably a poor choice. Moving on.

In all reality, these four strapping lads from Tennessee know what their doing. While other bands have tried to pull of the “aren’t we funny and cute?” thing way too often, Dear Hot Chick doesn’t resort to low-brow fart jokes that a certain unmentioned group might stray to. However, to even compare them to that band is a bit of misnomer; it would probably be more appropriate to position them in as a less achieved and much less mature Weezer. Their hooks are catchy enough to keep you listening, and lyrically their probably a head above the rest of the crowd. The main problem I can see is that I don’t feel really connected to what these guys are all about. Songs about being torn up about girls that seem “too cool for school” really feels old hat. Been there, done that. However, I know somewhere in the back of my mind that if I was a sophomore in high school this would be playing nonstop in my bedroom, real loud. In other words, it may not garner my complete adoration, but I can see that it has its place. So if you’re feeling like a horny, underappreciated dork, then the Weiner is for you, my lad.
