The Rocket Summer, Calendar Days
Militia Group 2003
By Kyle Renaud

Bryce Avary, also known as The Rocket Summer, has been playing instruments since he was twelve, and began the Rocket Summer when he was fourteen years old. Now in his twenties, he plays all the instruments drums, guitars, piano, bass and a few other miscellaneous instruments displaying a serious love for music and some pure natural talent. All the practice shows.

If there was one word I could use to describe the overall tone of “Calendar Days“ it would have to be happy; “The Rocket Summer” avoids falling into your typical emo songs about heart ache and break ups and rather goes for a happier sound with lyrics like "It's a beautiful day, / and now I'll be OK now that you're not away. / Yesterday was a terrible day, / but now that you're here, I'm OK… So thanks for your help. / You shine so bright. / You are the star that's in my sky. / and I am yours and you are mine." From the song “That’s So You,” which features Avary and his acoustic guitar: “I can’t stop thinking of how wonderful this is. And I'm sorry I sound glad, but why always be so sad?” Ok I will admit it the lyrics aren’t ingenious and at some times they sound plain childish but think about it: when you are in love or just got a job you really wanted you sound like a damn fool when you talk. But songs like "Skies So Blue" (one of my personal favorites on the album) are just one of those tunes where u cant help but tap your foot and sing along to the catchy melody and great lyrics. All in all I suggest buying this cd if you feel like being in a good mood cause “Calendar Days” is a real pick me up.

RATING: 4.5 out of 5
