Bio: When Justin joined the band in the fall of 2000, he had never played the drums. An interim to Brad's leaving for school, led to Justin as a permanent replacement when Brad decided to leave the band for good. Justin is a musical prodigy of sorts. Skilled as a concert saxaphonist, he can play almost any instrument in a matter of days. He became an incredible drummer after only a few weeks of playing; so much so, that he was playing shows with the band in less than a month. He breathed new life into TryMe songs like Revolver and Ash, and gave them a drive they didn't have before. Justin plays with a refined presicion and crisp method, yet his playing is constantly evolving. He's influenced heavily by Built to Spill's Brett Nelson, and The Red Hot Chile Pepper's Chad Smith. He's helped come up with some pretty interesting methods of song structure, and his history in music theory has helped not only the band, but Mike as well in arrangement. Although he is going to school for computer animation, he still plans to make TryMe an important part of his life, and hopefully, according to him, career. He hopes to help Jason and Mike find the strong points in their music as they turn into a temporary three piece in Jacob's absence. But he's looking forward to the day when the band is whole again. Like Mike told him at their first practice,"Justin Westplate, your gonna do just fine...just fine indeed." |
