Ushuaia: The End of the World

Background: Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago separated from the southernmost tip of the South American continent/mainland by the Strait of Magellan. Ferdinand Magellan, the most excellent of Portuguese explorers (first world circumnavigation), was the first European to pass by in 1520.

Located on Isla Grande the city of Ushuaia is 6098 kilometers (latitude 54°47' South, longitude 68°20' West) in a straight line to the equator or, in the other direction, 1171.1 km from the Antarctic Peninsula (65°05' S, 64°00' W).

Ushuaia is famous for being the southernmost city (population 55000) in the world. Pictures 2-4 show the city and the Beagle channel -- the latter named after the ship HMS Beagle (captain Robert FitzRoy, naturalist Charles Darwin) which was involved in surveys of the area.

Picture 6 is of the Antarctic Passenger Terminal, where tourists board boats (picture 7) destined for the continent of ice and snow ($3000-5000US).
