Picture 1: Machu Picchu, Lost City of the Incas, at 2350 meters. Located 70 km northwest of Cuzco, the latter once being the capital city of the Inca empire. As a country retreat town for Inca nobility it is estimated construction started around 1440 and was inhabited until the Spanish conquest of Peru in 1532.

The Incas first stepped into history around 1197 AD, with conquests to form an empire beginning in 1438 and lasting to 1532, less than 100 years. Centered on the Andean mountain ranges, the Incas ruled large parts of modern Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. The arrival of Francisco Pizarro and the Spaniards in 1532 brought an end to the largest empire in Pre-Columbian America.
