Along the border with Russia, the citizens of Vladivostok and other communities flock to Suifenhe's markets to buy an abundance of Chinese manufactured goods. Russian citizens so overwhelmingly number other foreign nationalities in cities like Suifenhe that everyone naturally thought I was Russian (including many Russians). To hear Chinese individuals speak Russian was quite peculiar and interesting, and it was usually humorous in my interactions with the local Chinese to 'play the Russian' and then reveal I was an English-speaking Canadian.
