I am 98% to the peak. Here I find myself staring at a section of the volcano where I may be unable to continue. From where I stand I cannot go straight up for up above it becomes too steep. But some forty feet to my right there is a crevice and it appears to go to the top. I am standing by the large rock in the distance for ten minutes in contemplation. Do I risk crossing over this crumbly terrain? I decide: I have not come all this way to call it quits now. Picking up two dagger-like rocks I chisel footholds into the shale and sand, testing each step with partial then full weight. This picture is looking back after a successful crossing. It doesn't look very steep or intimidating here but for me it was 'the make or break' moment of the whole climb.
