Temple I of the Mayan ruins of Tikal, tucked away in the rainforest of Northern Guatemala. Excavated Mayan sites in Mexico are tiny by comparison as Tikal boasts six temples, ranging from thirty-two to sixty-four meters in height.
Temple IV was the prize here. At sixty-four meters it towers over the forest canopy, giving one a clear view of the other temples and the surrounding landscape for as far as the eye can see. Wildlife seen as I walked the forest included acrobatic spider monkeys, howler monkeys who sound like supernatural wraiths, deer, a fox, parrots, toucans, cute coati, turkeys, hawks, and large colorful-patterned butterflies. |
