William F. Nolan's 300th anthology appearance has ocurred in the British paperback anthology "Alien Stories 2" edited by Dennis Pepper and published by the Oxford University Press. Bill's story "The Underdweller" appears here.

William F. Nolan completes Dashiell Hammett project
After 3 years of exhaustive research and writing William F. Nolan has completed and turned in to the publisher (Alfred A. Knopf) "A Life Beyond Thursday: The Dark World Of Dashiell Hammett. This 800 plus page bio promises to be the definitive bio of the author of "The Maltese Falcon."

The hard-boiled "Marble Orchard" has been released in mass market paperback by I-Books.
The issue price is $6.99 and is 240 pages. ISBN #0743444760. This book has immediately sold out and there is supposed to be a second printing, but in the meantime you may pick the book up via Barnes and Noble online.
William F. Nolan receives "Living Legend" Award
The International Horror Guild has awarded William F. Nolan the "Living Legend" award for 2002. Previous recipients have included Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson. Bill will be honored at the convention to be held in Chicago in mid April. Mr. Nolan will be there to receive the award and long time Logan fan Rick Bernier will be attending also.

I wish to notify Logan fans that, per the original contracts, all three Logan books, along with the e-book novellette, LOGAN"S RETURN, have been withdrawn from the Virtual Publishing Group of Berkeley, California. Virtual has the right to sell out their overstock copies, but no future printings will be forthcoming. When an actual production date has been set for the Warner Bros. remake of Logan's Run the books will be resold and republished in the new tie-in film editions. Until then, they are officially out of print.
I also want to alert my readers to an expansive new collection of my best shock-suspense fiction, WILLIAM F. NOLAN'S DARK UNIVERSE, just out and now available in full cloth hardback format from Stealth Press at $29.95 per copy. Finally, WHEN, you ask, will the new LOGAN'S RUN movie reach the screen? I wish I knew. It's all up to Warner Bros, Hopefully, by this time next year, the film will have been shot and into post-production. No cast or shooting schedule has been announced yet, but soon. I predict very soon. In the meantime, we just have to wait.

A Logan Update by William F. Nolan.
In the May/June issue of Creative Screenwriting writer/director Skip Woods is profiled as a potential "major influence on redefining the modern action film." It's revealed that he wrote and directed two low-budget films in Texas before coming to Hollywood to write the script for one of the big upcoming films of the summer, Swordfish, for Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. He is following it by writing and directing Logan's Run. The magazine describes Woods as having a "masterful grasp of plot, action, humor, and dialogue."
At the outset of the interview Woods talks about the new Logan film: "Every script that I write, everything that I'm interested in, is about a morally ambiguous guy finding his own set of ethics and living up to them. It's the classic writing structure where you have a guy who goes down into Hell and comes out a hero. That's what Logan is about...this guy who believes in the rules, who's a little confused about how his society can be killing people, but he buys it--that it's okay to kill everybody over the age of twenty-one for society as a whole. When he realizes it's complete bull, he turns against society, finds his own morality, and comes out on the other side as a new man. That's really what it's about."
Woods discussed his "ultimate goal" as a filmaker. "A film lasts a long time, if not forever. It needs to be important to you. I want to be proud of it."
When last we spoke, Woods was already into the screenplay, which he expects to complete this summer. Thus, the film is moving steadily towards production. Soon Logan will run again.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 24, 2001 at 5:00 PM as Bill will be at LASFS clubhouse in North Hollywood, California. He will be doing a reading of his short story "The Adventure of the Martian Moons."
This is part of a conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of Doyle's creation
William F. Nolan will be giving a radio interview Friday February 23, 2001 on the PBS radio station KPBS - 89.5 FM, in San Diego, California. The interview will be from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PST on their local talk show These Days hosted by Tom Fudge. The interview with Bill will focus on the mystery genre and Dashiell Hammett's influence on it. The icon to the right will link you to KPBS. I have been notified by Pam Hardy (senior producer) that you can listen to the interview live on the internet that day, and even call into the program at their toll free number 1-888-895-5727. I will post the transcript of the interview at a later date in the article section on the site.
Contracts have been signed with Alfred A. Knopf for Bill's next book about Dashiell Hammett titled A Life Beyond Thursday: The Dangerous World of Dashiell Hammett.
Scheduled tentatively for a 2002 release, this book will be the definitive biography and bibiliography on Dashiell Hammett. Bill's previous works on Dashiell Hammett are titled Dashiell Hammett: A Casebook, and Hammett: A Life at the Edge.
