Pollution can be divided into three different types: solids, water, and air.  In this section we will talk briefly about each type of pollution and how they are affecting our planet today.

Effects of Solid Pollution
Solid wastes are undesired solid materials or unusable solid materials that we depose of.  Every year tons of wastes are disposed.  Popular artificial treatment of the solid wastes includes landfill and burning.  After it became relatively cheap, landfill became the most popular way of treating the solid wastes.  Landfill is the most effective way of treating the dangerous and hazardous materials.  By burning, large volume of solid wasted can be reduced to dense ashes.  Moreover, composting, as a way of reducing the solid wastes, is popular in the developed countries such as Japan.  They use natural biological processes to speed the decomposition of organic wastes.  It is an effective strategy to transform the organic garbage into the materials used as a natural fertilizer.

Effects of Water Pollution
Water pollution is not as obvious and noticeable as in the solid wastes and air pollution, but even it is not visible and not immediate, water pollution can causes serious damages to both environment and our health.  Water pollutions are generally caused from the industrial production liquid wastes, and human liquid wastes.  Everyday household organism wastes entering into the surface waters such as rivers and oceans result in swarming of bacteria and excess nutrients in the water that make the algae wildly spread.   Besides household wastes, various toxic chemical materials in the liquid waste produced by the industrial production are discharged into the surface water.  In addition, industrial processed wastewater that entering the rivers and oceans is not suitable for dissolving the oxygen for supporting aquatic lives.  General damages of the water pollution include unsuitable water for drinking, agriculture and industrial purpose.

According to the city of urbanan’s storm water management program:

“Sediment can cloud water and make it difficult for aquatic plants to grow and aquatic animals to live.

Excess nutrients can cause algae blooms.

Bacteria and other pathogens can wash into swimming areas and create health hazards.

Debris— plastic bags, six-pack rings, bottles, and cigarette butts—washed into water bodies can choke, suffocate, or disable aquatic life like ducks, turtles, and birds.

Household hazardous wastes like insecticides, pesticides, paint, solvents, motor oil, and other auto fluids can poison aquatic life.”
