Reference New information on this and Charles Davis.

Charles Davis is the brother of this Thomas Davis. They were both born in Spotsylvania County, VA. Charles Davis lived in Jessamine Co, Ky.

Received the full pension application file on Thomas Davis 1 Jul 98 from lineages. He mentions having served two months as a substitute for his brother Benjamin Davis. He was born in Spotsylvania Co. He also served an 18 month tour in the Virginia line from 25 Apr 1779 to Oct 1780, as a private in the company commanded by Capt Parker, of the Regiment commanded by Col Parker.

In the full pension application for Thomas Davis I found a list of his children and their dates of birth. On the same list above that was another list of his brothers and sisters, which also includes his date of birth. The first names of the list was not readable except for the last one to three letters of the first name in many cases. I listed that portion of the copy that was barely readable.

This list came from the inside of a bible cover. The bible cover has a handwritten date of 1809 on it and it is the PSALTER or PSALMS of DAVID according to the use of The Church of England. They all are presumed to have been born in Spotsylvania County Virginia because Thomas Davis was born there, raised there, and enlisted in the VA line, Continental Army there. He died in Woodford County Kentucky but I am not sure where his brothers and sisters relocated to from Spotsylvania County Virginia. I am convinced Thomas Davis was son of James Davis, Spotsylvania, Co, VA but --- Davis was not one of his children listed in his 1765 death settlement proceedings. Information from Michael Ann Guido indicates it was "Snead" and not Richard Davis born in 1748 probably passed away prior to 1765. There was a name missing from the top that Michael Ann Guido provided from the original bible cover which is John Fielding Davis, b. 1740. There are eight children listed in the "death settlement proceedingss" if James, and Charles are not counted twice, even though their names are mentioned twice in the proceedings. I interpret the record as one James and one Charles Davis.

After the research above was done I found out that Thomas Davis youngest son of James Conway Davis had moved to Woodford County, Kentucky ealiest of the family. He was close to the Woodford county line with Jessamine County. His brother was Charles Davis that is my ancestor, I believe to be father of James B Davis. As for the list above it was James Carter Davis born 1741 who remained in Virginia because he had inherited a large portion of the estate there. Benjamin Davis born 1743 died in Virginia but at least two or thee of his sons had migrated to Kentucky a few counties away from Jessamine. I do not know what happened to Elizabeth Davis born 22 Feb 1745, but think it is in Dr. Miller's book on the Carter family. There were Snead and Felix Davis sons who died as infants or children. Mary Davis born 1753 was also known as "Polly" and is the author of the letters to her younger brother "Thomas Davis" in Kentucky. I think Mary stayed in Virginia. Charles Davis, my ancestor, moved to Jessamine County about 1796 to 1798 and died there about 1807. If the abstract showing Charles Davis death 1 Feb 1807 matched that would be the exact date but not positive that is a match but his widow Hannah stated it was about the year 1807 or 1808 that he passed away. Thomas Davis born 1761 was the first to move to Kentucky of the family, settling in Woodford County just across the line from where Charles Davis settled in Jessamine County a few years later. Thomas had a large family and left a very traceable heritage in documents and descendants and ancestors, (see Dr. J. L. Miller's book "The Descendants of Capt Thomas Carter" which contains our Davis family heritage.
