Manga can be purchased new, for cover price or less, through amazon.co.jp They will accept most major credit cards, as long as they have been cleared by your credit card company for overseas use (all this takes is a phone call to let them know you intend to makes some charges from Japan). Search is in Japanese but most root and ordering menus are now available in English as well.
Chara comics, in particular, do not stay in print terribly long. As a result, Zip-Up Boy and parts of Animal X are now available only through the resale market. Since, when this situation occurs, it's nearly impossible to by a new, royalty-generating copy, you may as well just go to Ob-session for a copy of the scanslation. Buying comics resale does not support the artists in any fashion
For those simply wanting hard-copies, out-of-print manga can sometimes be found at JpQueen or encountered on ebay. Those making a trip to Japan (Tokyo or Osaka) will find large resale chains Mandarake, KBooks and Book Off available to excess (particularly good selection is available in Mandarake Shibuya, Mandarake Ikebukuro, and BOOK OFF Harajuku... all in Tokyo).
