JOSEPH BEAVERS & SARAH ROBINSON
Joseph was born on September 14, 1797. He met Sarah Robinson in Georgia where they married in the year 1821. They moved to Alabama between 1837 and 1839 where their last two children were born. Ten years later, the Beavers had settled in Lafayette County, Mississippi near the small town of Paris.


THEIR CHILDREN

  • ELISABETH (13 Nov 1823 in Georgia).
  • WILLIIAM HARVO(23 Dec 1825 in Georgia). William married a woman named EMMA ELIZA in either Alabama or Mississippi. They have one known child, SARAH.
  • SARAH ANN (30 Dec 1827 in Georgia).  She died at the age of fifteen.
  • LYDIA MELISSA(29 Jan 1829 in Georgia.) Married SAMUEL FIELDER HAMBLETT in Paris, MS. After raising a large family, she died there in 1885.
  • JOSEPH BEAVERS (25 Nov 1830 in Georgia.)  Married PERMILIA MCCARTY in 1858 in Louisiana. They lived near Sikes in Winn Parish, LA.
  • MARY SAMANTHA (11 Nov 1832 in Georgia) Married John THOMAS and lived in Concordia Parish. John died in 1860 (a few years after their marriage) and Mary's father was named undertutor of her son, JAMES MADISON THOMAS.
  • LUTITIA CAROLINE (29 Mar 1834 in Georgia). Married JOHN SUTHERLAND in Concordia Parish.
  • JAMES MADISON (18 Mar 1837 in Georgia). Married a young woman named Martha Jane Dampier in Louisiana. He died in an Army hospital in Grenada, Ms during the war leaving behind a child, AMANDA. Martha remarried to Matthew Smith or Matthias Smith in Winn Parish. Amanda marries John Spain (possibly Spann).
  • JOHN HOLLIS (5 Aug 1839 in AL). John was nearly twenty at his death in May of 1859.
  • NANCY MALINDA (27 June 1842 in AL).  She married DR. JAMES ARTHUR SAUNDERS in Catahoula Parish. She served in the War beside her husband as a field nurse. Family "legend" tells of Nancy standing in a wagon surveying a field for wounded soldiers when she is fatally wounded .

The descendants of Joseph and Permilia have resided in the Sikes community of Winn Parish for nearly 150 years. Joseph met and married Permilia MCarty whose family blazed the trail for homesteaders to enter this new region of land. Joseph and Permilia's children are listed below with a little information about each.
  • ALCY CRAYTON married SERENTHA BELL KING and raised their family near Hill in Winn Parish.

  • AUGUSTA ANN married JAMES JACKSON PARKER and some of their descendants moved to Jackson Parish.
    Their children were:

    John W. Parker
    James Elzy Parker

  • WILLIAM ELZA died at the age of five.
  • JOSEPHINE first married JOHN WASHINGTON PERKINS and then later to JAMES HASTON HIGDON of Beech Creek.The children of Josephine and James were:

    Henry Higdon
    Lottie Mae Higdon Abrams

  • MARY IDA married ELIJAH FORD and raised their family in Sikes then moved to Coushatta in Red River Parish.Their children were:

    Edwin A. Ford
    Myrtle E. Ford Bell

  • JOSEPH EDWARD married NANCY ALLEN and they moved to LaSalle Parish.Their children were:

  • ISABELLA MARTHA married JOHN HARGROVE.  They lived in Franklin Parish and last known residence was in Castor, Louisiana.Their children:

    William Burl Hargrove
    Eutha Lillie MAe Hargrove Yelverton
    Byrtle Irene Hargrove

  • WALTER HICKMAN died at the age of seven.

The Joseph Beavers' family settled near Paris, Mississippi just south of Oxford circa 1838. They resided there until 1857. One daughter,Lydia Melissa Beavers Hamblett, is buried
in the Hamblett cemetery located
west of the town of Paris.

Joseph Beavers, Sr. lived the ten years prior to his death around Monterey community. The actual property owned by his daughter Mary and her husband, John Thomas, was located at the bottom tip of Cocodrie State Park west of Vidalia and south of Frogmore.

Winn Parish, Louisiana

Joseph Beavers, his brother James and sister Nancy, (children of Joseph and Sarah) followed the trail north from Trinity, Louisiana into new land of Winn Parish. At the time, this land was still a part of Catahoula and Caldwell Parishes. Joseph first settled land near Brister school then moved to property near the Sikes Fire Tower. The Beavers' have held land in the Sikes area since 1858.
