Company G (Barksdale Grays), 20th Regiment, Mississippi
Volunteer Infantry
of Winston County, Mississippi
mustered into State service at Webster on May 25, 1861
The
20th Infantry Regiment was organized during the late summer of 1861
with men from Bolivar, Monroe, Noxubee, Adams, Scott, Carroll, Newton, Jasper
and Winston counties. The unit moved to
Virginia in late September of 1861, and had the distinction of being the
first Mississippi unit to serve under the command of Gen. Robert E. Lee. The 20th suffered terrible winter
conditions in while in Virginia. Later,
the unit moved to Tennessee, where in February, 1862, it was captured at Fort
Donelson. In this engagement it
lost 19 killed of the 31 officers and 469 men present. The Regiment was exchanged and assigned to
Tilghman’s and J. Adam’s Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East
Louisiana. The 20th served
for a time in the Vicksburg area and then was transferred to the Army of
Tennessee, placed in J. Adam’s and Lowry’s Brigade, and was involved in the Atlanta
and Tennessee Campaigns. The 20th
ended the war in North Carolina; only a remnant surrendered on April 26,
1865. Its commanders were Colonels
William N. Brown and D. R. Russell; Lieutenant Colonels D. H. Maury, Horace H.
Miller, and Walter A. Rorer; and Majors William M. Chatfield, Thomas B. Graham,
and C. K. Massey.

Regiment, Company G
John Richardson, born July 09, 1790 in Newberry County, South
Carolina; died January 20, 1878 in Winston County, Mississippi. He was the son of (Mr.) Richardson. He married Heried Annis Lee in 1817
in Newberry County, South Carolina. Heried
Annis Lee was born October 10, 1797 in Newberry County, South
Carolina; died August 02, 1873 in Winston County, Mississippi. John and Heried Annis Richardson are both
buried at Betheden Lutheran Church Cemetery, Winston County, MS.
Notes for John
Richardson:
Paraphrased from a
Historical Research Project - Winston County
Formation of the
county - early settlers
About the year 1844,
northwestern Winston County began to be colonized by a group of people from
Newberry District, South Carolina of German descent who were spoken of by other
pioneers as the "black Dutch" from South Carolina. A group piloted by M. A. Metts included the
families Livingston, Kinard, Long, Richardson, Greer, Prisocks, Lynch, Baker,
Suber, and others. By the 1850's, the
majority had arrived. Betheden was the
largest community built by the "Dutch" settlers. It was a place of dignity and refinement in
contrast to the rowdiness of nearby Webster.
Other settlements where these people found homes were Shady Grove and
Antioc.
