Calici virus (also known as FVC) is an upper respiratory ailment. Symptoms of calici virus infection range from mild mucous discharge from the eyes and nose to swollen eyelids and full-blown pneumonia. There are various strains of calici virus, producing various symptoms. In general, the healthier the cat the more easily it will be able to fight a calici virus infection. Age, nutrition and vaccination are the key factors. Feeding your cat the right amount of a premium food and seeing a veterinarian annually for vaccinations are the best steps towards protecting your pet. The virus is spread by infected cats. If you find or have a feline with watery eyes, runny nose, red and swollen eyes or who is sneezing, keep the animal isolated from your other cats until you can take it to your veterinarian to be examined. FVC is specifically a feline disease: it cannot be transmitted to dogs or humans. |
