Although both caused by viruses, canine parainfluenza is not an analagous condition to human influenza in the way that the experience of chronic arthritis is shared between our two mammalian species. Whereas the human "flu" produces vomiting, fever and the chills, caine parainfluenza is an infection of the lungs which typically manifests as a non-productive (without expelled phlegm) cough. Like the flu for people, parainfluenza infections in elderly dogs can have a more devastating effect than that found in younger, stronger patients. Similar to the coronavirus infection which cause "kennel cough", one of the threats with a parainfluenza infection is that other viruses and bacteria will attack the immune system with success while your pet is down with the original infection. I fact, parainfluenza and bordetella infections often go hand-in-hand. Treatments are available. As with all viral infections, however, our ability to attack the virus itself is limited. We usually focus treatment on the symptoms of an infection, and help to bolster a dog's strength, but it takes time for your pet's immune system to defend itself against the invaders. Respiratory problems can drag out for months, even for the strongest of pets. Therefore, the best course of medicine is prevention through vaccination. Get your new puppy to a vet as soon after adoption as possible. Have him examined to be sure he is free of active infection. Begin the vaccination protocals so that your healthy pup will stay that way, and then maintain your canine companion with an annual visit to the vet! |
