Proheart
injectable six-month heartworm protection
One of the more recent entries into the preventative market is ProHeart 6, from Fort Dodge Pharmaceuticals. For owners who tend to forget their dog's monthly preventative or have pets which are averse to eating any medication, ProHeart may be the protection of choice.

Costwise, ProHeart compares with Interceptor Flavor Tabs. ProHeart uses the long-lasting active ingredient moxidectin, whereas Interceptor contains milbemycin oxime and require monthly redosing. The other main difference between these two products is that ProHeart DOES NOT provide lasting protection against the several forms of intestinal parasites which are prevalent in the environment in Alabama. If you have a completely indoor pet, he or she is not beyond the reach of mosquitos, which transfer the heartworms from host to host. However, a primarily indoor-dwelling canine may remain free of the intestinal worms (hooks, rounds and whips).

So, if you have a dog which stays inside most of the time and you would prefer not to have to deal with a monthly preventative, speak with Dr. Philip Smith or Brian Hicks about a ProHeart 6 injection.
