The Reveal
By TT

(Lester)
Lester sat back in the recliner his eyes on the flickering screen in front of him, but his mind was years away – light years.

He had known Bobbie for fifteen years and was closer to him than he had ever been to anyone or anything.

There were times he would swear that Bobby knew him better than he knew himself. Life would be much less fun without his friend and partner.

True, the ladies would still be there for him to keep his bed warm at night, but one couldn’t spend all their time in bed, thus it was imperative to have someone you could get along with as a partner.

Over the years, growing up, in the army and later at Rangeman, Lester had discovered just how important it was to have complete and utter trust in your partner. You had to know them as well as you knew yourself there could be no secrets.

And that was the problem. Lester was hiding a secret, a big secret. It was something he had held close to his heart for as long as he could remember and it was something he should never reveal to anyone.

He had been warned time and again of the dangers of anyone finding out his secret, but it was difficult to hold onto it. It wore at him until he couldn’t take it anymore.

Tonight was a night like any other, but tonight he would share his secret with Bobby and it would change their friendship forever.

(Bobby)
Bobby sipped from his beer. He could feel Lester looking at him and wondered if his friend, his partner knew his secret, or even that he had one.

He had met Lester when they were both teenage punks who thought they knew everything and that the world owed them everything.

They had been in more fights, scrapes and trouble than almost anyone else they knew. They had grown from the epitome of street punks to highly-skilled soldiers and beyond.

The two of them had been in more difficult and trying situations than an action-movie writer could imagine. They had the scars to prove it, too.

There was no one on the planet who knew Bobby better than Lester did. They could anticipate each other the way only long term partners could. They trusted each other implicitly. They would always have each other’s back.

The problem was, Bobby was hiding a secret. It was a secret he had held close to his heart his entire life. The necessity of keeping the secret had been drilled into him for as long as he could remember. It wasn’t only his safety that depended on his keeping it, after all.

But there had always been a small nagging amount of guilt in his soul when it came to keeping his secret from Lester.

Despite the need to keep this secret to himself, he could feel his resolve weakening.

Tonight was a night like any other, but tonight he would share his secret with Lester and it would change their friendship forever.

The movie wound down to its inevitable conclusion. The heroes were left dirt-smudged, bleeding and smoke-infused, but joyful. If only real life worked out that way. He had seen to much to expect such endings, though. He knew that most likely he would need every skill he had, every bit of knowledge at his disposal to escape after the truth was revealed.

He would have to leave Trenton and lose himself in humanity once again. He would have to choose someplace far away from Rangeman. It was a good thing he had some contacts that even Bobby didn’t know about. If he was lucky enough to escape after the revelation, he would be able to survive.

But even if he lost everything he had, even if he had to leave this life behind, it would be worth it to no longer have any secrets from his friend.

(Bobby)
The movie was almost over. That meant that the time was nearing when he would have to reveal his secret.

There was no telling how Lester would react to his revelation. His friend might accept it or he might freak out.

With any luck, Lester wouldn’t go for a weapon, though that was a possibility, too.

Should Lester react violently or with disgust, or if it looked like he would share Bobby’s secret with others, Bobby would have to slip out of Trenton and disappear, losing himself in the mass of humanity far away from the reach of Rangeman.

It was a good thing he had contacts Lester didn’t know. If he could get out of the building and to those contacts, he would be safe.

But even if he lost everything he had, even if he had to leave this life behind, it would be worth it to no longer have any secrets from his friend.

(Lester)
Lester took the last sip of beer and set the bottle aside. Taking a deep breath, he leaned forward, his hands resting lightly on his thighs.

“Bobby,” he began. He saw his friend look at him intently. “I’ve known you for what seems like my entire life. From the time we were punks to the present, but there’s something I haven’t told you about myself, something… something that will probably change how you look at me forever, but I’m tired of carrying this secret by myself.”

“Lester,” Bobby said, as if trying to stop his friend.

“No,” Lester cut off. “I need to say this.” Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again. When he did, he heard Bobby gasp. Lester knew exactly why Bobby had done so. “I’m not human,” Lester informed. As he continued, he allowed his disguise to slowly fade. His skin became a light greenish hue. His dark, spiky hair disappeared, only to be replaced by long, blond locks. His features remained mostly human, but became more delicate. His eyes were now a deep green with slit pupils, like a cat’s. “My planet has long been at war with a neighboring planet. My mother was the daughter of the ruler of the B’Velt. My father was the second son of the P’dot’u. There was a pitched battle on the moon that circled both planets. During that battle, a severe storm began. My parents took shelter. They recognized each other as enemies, but they knew they needed each other to survive the storm. Slowly, during the five rotations the storm lasted, they lost their prejudices and well… you can figure out the rest. I was the result. When the storm stopped, my parents had no choice but to leave their shelter and go their own ways. But my mother was already carrying me. When I was born, she had no choice but to flee her world. She sent a message to my father, but she never knew if he received it or not. We eventually found our way to another planet who helped us hide here. I’ve been told never to reveal the truth to anyone, but I had no choice. I couldn’t go on hiding this secret from you.”

(Bobby)
Bobby was stunned. Never in a million astral units would he imagine that his friend had such a history.

But Lester’s revelation made his own much easier.

Taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and allowed his own disguise to fall.

He heard Lester gasp and knew what his friend was seeing. Bobby’s skin was a deep blue, his eyes were brown and carried the same cat’s-eye slits. His features were far more rugged than Lester’s, but handsome never the less. The dark brown hair of his disguised was replaced by the shoulder-length purple mane with which he had been born.

Reaching out, he covered Lester’s hand with his own.

“I loved your mother very much,” he said, his voice deeper than normal and resonating with a tone that could only be heard by others of his species. “I did get her note, but not in time to flee with her.”

Lester stared at the other being, his mouth agape. “What? But? You?”

Bobby smiled and nodded. In a reassuring tone, he informed, “Lester, I am your father.”

End.
