Direct heated 1624 SE Stereo Amplifier
About the 1624-RCA

The 1624-RCA is a transmitting tube very much like the well-known 807, the major difference being a direct- heated filament, 2 volts- 2,5 amperes.
Connected as a pseudotriode (screen to the plate, by means of a resistor) it is a good performer for a SE amplifier.
In fact this tube has a number of advantages compared to other tubes of similar poweroutput:
-
RCA: NOS-quality terms- stands for rigid construction, reliability, good sound, nice look.
-
DIRECT-HEATED sound, more like a 2A3 than an 807
-better  and cheaper than many triodes of todays current productions.
-
EASY to drive,  unlike other triodes (eg. 2A3, 300B)
no high  voltage swing  is required; in my amp cathode bias is -23 Volt. It is possible to use  a good quality
low µ-tube as a driver, such as the 6SN7. No problems with slew-rate either, since the anode current of the driver is about 3mA!
