I love hammocks, and I could not find a pattern to make my own ANYWHERE.  So I came up with my own.  Its easy to do and will last forever.
HOMEMADE HAMMOCK
Materials :
2 wooden dowels at least one inch thick and  40 inches long
4 heavy rings, 3 inch diameter or more
2 "C" hooks
16 fifty foot lengths of cord
2 ten foot lengths of cord
1 six foot length of cord
Special note:
2 of the rings are for attaching to the tree permanently and two are for attaching to the hammock.  And you hook them together with the C hooks.  This way you can bring the hammock in for the winter.

I used 1/4 inch washline, so if you use smaller you may need to adjust the amount of cords you use, but remember to keep the number in multiples of 4
Instructions :
Take the 16 lengths of cord and thread them through one of the rings.  Fold them in half and tie them temporarily below the ring till you get them on the dowel.

The double half hitch all the cords onto the dowel.  The centre one should be approximately 15 inches from the ring.

using 4 cords, starting at one side, tie square knots across to the other side
Next row:  Leave the first two cords, and tie square knots across to the other side, ending with two cords left over.
Next row:  Tie square knots starting with the two you missed last time.
*repeat* this process until the section between the dowels measures about eight feet.

Then double half hitch the cords onto the other dowel.

Thread the cords through a ring and fold them over. Do a wrap at the ring about four to six inches long.  Leave about two feet of cord hanging and cut the rest off.

Attach the other two rings to the trees or posts you will he hanging from, and use the C hooks to attach the hammock to that.

Take one of the ten foot lengths and tie it to the dowel and wind it around the outer cords about twice between each square knot all the way to the other end and tie to that dowel. (You will have to pull it tight and adjust it as the hammock stretches into shape.)  Do the same to the other side.  Soon you will see the familiar hammock dip and you're ready for a long nap in the yard.

If you used a good cord or washline, you can leave it out in all weather, but I bring mine in for the winter.
Have fun and enjoy your new creation.

( kids will not sleep in it, they think it is a great swing.  I have had 6 kids swinging on it at one time, with no major mishaps, very sturdy.
