The "SIRIUS" was the flagship of the First Fleet, built in 1780 as a merchant vessel. Bought by the Navy and refitted in 1781, it was finally lost at Norfolk Island in 1791. Our William arrived onboard the SIRIUS as a marine Private. Its Captain, John Hunter (1793) said of his human cargo, "....the convicts (were) some of the worst characters ever sent out from Great Britain." Painting by Salvatore Zofrea. |
