The 7 basic steps of a serve (each step is described in greater
detail below):
1. Going to the serving area
2. Choosing/getting a drinking vessel
3. Checking and cleaning the vessel
4. Getting/Preparing the drink or food
5. Returning to the Master
6. Kneeling position
7. Actual serve
1. Going to the servery/serving area.
This is when you rise from where ever you are and walk to serving
area. In Turia, the servery is a room adjoining the main Hall. You
do not "feel the cool night air blowing your hair," "lift your face
to the
sun," etc. you are not outside when going to the servery.
- Weaving your way through the furs carefully to the servery...
- Padding quietly over the cool tiles of the Hall
2. Choosing/getting a drinking vessel or serving plate
Once you decide on the drinking vessel (goblet, bowl, mug or horn),
you need to get it from the shelves. This is a good time to show
off a
bit of yourself - either as blatantly or subtly as you wish, and
as much
as is allowed by your "color" (white or red). Usually the vessel
is up
high or down low to add an effort when getting it.
3. Checking the vessle and cleaning the vessel
Checking the rim of the vessel is done to prevent any harm coming
the
the lips of the Master being served. This is checked on the body
of the
slave. Cleaning the vessel shows that you care about getting the
best for
the Master you are serving. You can clean the vessel with a rep
cloth
or hem of your silks, or even with your hair.
4. Getting/Preparing the drink or food.
This is one of the more intricate steps to a serve. Many of the
drinks
have their particular way of being prepared, dependent on their
storage....kalana in bottles in the servery or the cold storage,
paga in
botas, ale in casks, etc.
5. Returning to the Master
Returning to the Master is also a time to show off and to focus
the
attention on you and the Master you serve. This alerts the Master
that
he is now coming to the center of your attention. Be descriptive
in the
movement of your body as you return to the Hall and move to the
feet
of the one you are serving.
6. Kneeling position/posture
This is self explanatory. When returning to the one you are serving,
you
ALWAYS kneel before Him or Her. If you are serving food and will
offer to feed the one you are serving, you still kneel and then
beg
permission to rise to the lap of the one you are serving.
7. Actual serve
There are two parts to the actual serve - the physical motion and
a
spoken blessing. In the physical motion - the vessel must be brought
to
the slave's heart (to show devotion) and then, if the drink is to
be
tested, a small sip is taken by you, waiting five beats of your
heart to
insure the safety of the drink before offering it to the one you
are
serving. Once sure that no poisons are found in the drink, or food,
place a kiss to the rim (Yes, slaves' lips may touch the rim of
the vessel
BEFORE the lips of a Master or Mistress touch it) and offer the
vessel
to the one you are serving. to the lips for a kiss (and a sip, in
some
cases) to show that the drink is not poisoned and then to bow her
head
and offer up the vessel. The actual serve make take a couple of
posts.
Once the vessel has been accepted, ask if you may offer anything
further. If nothing more is desired, back away and busy yourself
with
the duties of a slave.
"Serve us paga, Slave," said Msaliti.
She stiffened. Then she smiled. "Yes,
Master," she said. ...
"Paga, Master?" she asked, kneeling before
me, the metal cup held before her, in her
two hands.
"Yes," I said.
She proffered the cup to me. She knelt back
on her heels, her knees wide, and extended
her arms to me, the cup in her hands.
"Did you not neglect to kiss it?" I asked her.
She drew back the cup, and pressing her
lips to it, kissed it.
"Is that how a slave kisses the cup of a
Master?" I asked.
She again turned her head to the side and
pressed her lips softly, lingeringly, against it.
Then she kissed it. I saw a tremor course
through her body. ...
Then again kneeling back on her heels, her
knees wide, extending her arms to me, the
cup in her hands, she proffered me the
drink.
"Your head should be down, between your
arms," I said. She put her head down. Again
I saw a small movement in her body, a
tremor, subtle. She had put her head down
before a man. Another consequence of this
positions is that the girl's eyes, in the specific
act of her serving, do not meet those of the
master. They are lowered before his, as one
who submits. This is also reminiscent, in an
experienced girl, of her training. Often in
training, a girl is not permitted to look into
the eyes of the trainer, unless he should
spcifically extend this permission. Indeed, in
some cities, the girl in training may not raise
her eyes above the trainer's belt, unless,
again, specifically accorded this permission.
"Speak," I said to her.
"Your paga, Master," she said.

Some additional thoughts and tips
1. Always acknowledge the Master's command for service. This is a
very short post, simply acknowledging that you have heard the
command and are responding.
2. Keep posts a reasonable length, usually no more than 7-8 lines.
3. NEVER cut and paste ANY portion of a serve. It is terribly lazy
and it will be noticed.
4. Add details like wrinkling your nose at the smell of the paga
or
shivering at the cold goblet of the kalana touchs your skin. Make
your
own trade mark. Details make the serve more interesting... and that
helps you stand out.
5. In Port Olni, slaves are allowed to use ulos (small cutting knives)
without asking permission. When serving in other homes always ask
permission before touching
anything that might be considered a weapon.
6. When serving food, alway mention arranging it in a pleasant manner
to suit the taste of the one you serve. Also, in serving the plate
of food,
always kiss the rim of it before you offer.
