Turkman Shiia Council
Our council was
established on August 24 2003, a day after several Turkman Shiias were shot and
killed in the town of Tuz Khurmatu
The council's main aim is to increase the
awareness among the Shiias of Iraq across their different ethnic entities. Many
Iraqi Shiias may not know that there are Turkmans who are
Shiia.
Who Are the Turkmans
The Turkmans are the third
largest ethnic group in Iraq. They number between 2-3 million. Most of them are
Shiia.
The Turkmans live mainly in the northern part of Iraq. And their
main concentration is in the city of Kerkuk (Kirkuk). This city is the richest
city in oil; and that is why it , and will continue to be, a tense city. Based
on the British Public Records Office (PRO), Turkmen were the majority in this
city
A famous Shiia Turkman district of Kerkuk is called Tiseen (Arabic for number Ninety). It was called as such because a group of early Shiias who went to join Imam Husain (as) in Kabala, they arrived after the 10 th of Muharram, after the Amawi authorities discovered them, the group fled north and settled here, in Tiseen, there numbered ninety of them
