The Lilbourn church of Christ Strives To be The Same Church Described In the New Testament.
It is our purpose to be members of the same kind of church as described in the New Testament. This is possible by believing and obeying the same gospel that was believed and obeyed in the first century. The word of God produces Christians just as it did in the first century, no more and no less.
Our Emphasis is Spiritual, Not Material or Social.
The purpose of the church has never been on the material or the social. Its purpose is of a spiritual nature. We try to follow this pattern today. The church is the “pillar and ground of the truth.” (I Timothy 3:15)
No Head But Christ.
There is no group of men or one man that has any authority over the body of Christ. The only head is Christ. It is He that is the head of the church (Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18). There is no organization that links local congregations together, but rather independent congregations in different locations with Christ as Lord and Master. Of course, a local congregation is to have Elders (bishops, overseers, pastors) to look after the spiritual welfare of the church. These are men who meet the qualifications of I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. Their authority, however, is limited to the local congregation in which they were appointed (I Peter 5:2).
The Bible Is Our Only Guide.
Because of this, we have no man made creed that we follow. We conform our teaching and our lives to the New Testament scriptures (Hebrews 1:1-2). We believe the bible to be both inspired and infallible (II Peter 1:20-21).
We Desire Unity.
If we do these things we will be unified. This is what the desire of the Lord and His apostles wanted (Jn. 17:20- 21; 1 Cor. 1:10; Eph. 4:1-6). Division has always resulted from departing from the faith. Division can and will be avoided if only we will abide by the word.
