Review of the Event |
Six members of TIFC made it to South Jersey to see Mary Youngblood's performance... Mary puts on a great show! Her stage presence is warm, and she embraces the audience as if she were playing to a group of friends. As well as being a wonderful Native American flute player, this talented woman uses every opportunity to educate as well as entertain. From a story of how a song came to be dedicated to a courageous man defending his home, to tribal colors and traditional dress of her ancestors, no stone is left unturned. Between sets, Mary graciously invited all who attented to come up on stage and have a look at the many instruments she had out for the concert. There was much interest generated in the Native American Flute that night. During the show, Ms. Youngblood also asks that anyone in the audience who brought a drum accompany her with a rhythm for some improvisational pieces. Since I was down in Florida and had the opportunity to meet Mary there, she asked me to bring my drum with me to this performance. I played a traditional African drum, and there was also another person there with a traditional Lakota made Native American drum. Between the two of us, we hammered out some funky rhythms and got a good jam going at a few different intervals of the concert. Thanks again for the opportunity Mary! I really had a blast! We are all looking forward to Mary's next visit in our area. As soon as I have any information on when and where that will be, I'll update the site... so CHECK BACK!!! |
