MEDIA WORLD MONTHLY BIG GRIPE

"Media Bias":

"The Liberal Media". How many times have you heard that one? While it may have been true thirty years ago, things have really changed. I don't doubt that a number of journalists are democrats, but it's probably the same make up as any other profession in the country. There are some good reasons for people in the broadcasting / media business to lean left, but only the rank and file. The owners and upper management can thank the republicans for their good fortunes. For example, it was a republican majority house that passed the 'Telecommunications Act of 1996' which paved the way for ownership monopolies. Before this act, media owners had strict limits on cross ownership - basically not allowing them to own too many radio and TV stations, and newspapers as well. After 1996 the restrictions were eased, and companies like Clear Channel and Radio One started buying up properties, forever changing the business. Consolidation soon followed, and many people were downsized. Jobs were merged, and while the lower end of the pay scale suffered layoffs and increased duties for less pay, the managers that remained got big raises. These large conglomerates also embraced new technology that allowed them to automate stations and allow one radio personality to be on multiple stations across the country. While local radio suffered, it still saved a ton of money. It's easy to see why a reporter at a TV station, a radio personality, a promotions person, etc., would be unhappy with the people that allowed this to happen. It's also easy to see why the heads of these big conglomerates are very conservative. This is why Clear Channel donates money to the republicans, for example. Now, with all of this being said, where is the bias? It seems that the checks and balances are fairly even. For every Disney/ABC there is a Sinclair or FOX. For every O'Reilly there is an Al Frankin. For every Washington Post and New York Times there is a NY Post and Washington Times. One thing about capitalism, money will always come out on top of any biases. If there is a way to make money off of people with whatever point of view that they have, you can bet that corporate media will go after it. A good example of this is conservative corporate giant Clear Channel (owner of 1200+ radio stations, TV stations, Ticketmaster, billboards, and more) is now airing parts of the liberal "Air America" radio network on some of it's stations. While the corporate heads there might donate to the republicans, they are more than willing to take money from the other side. Checks and balances. Again, where's the bias?
