Grans notes: Robert went into the Royal Dragoons but was asked to leave after amounting £30,000 worth of debts (no small sum in 1880's). Had no job and was sent to Canada as a remittance man. He wondered to America and met Adelaide. The family was furious and he was not allowed home for along time. WW1 joined the Seaforth Highlanders as a private, rose to sergeant but was kicked out of the regiment for embezzling army funds. Heavily turned to drink, ended in a home for inebriates in Scotland suffering from Dilerium Tremens. Adelaide came to London but used to visit the Salvesens in Norway and Scotland. Adelaide was a singer in a second rate music hall. Pretty with red hair. Adelaide Roddy, her father was in the American Navy (at Naval Rating). Her mother was a cornish farmer's daughter. She and her sister (Maisie) were the only two children and Maisie never married or had any children. |
