Home Windows Help Talk Like A Geek Tech News Links
Many people today have more than one computer in there house. Also many people have opted for high speed internet such as Cable or DSL. Assuming you want to have every computer connected to the internet you will have to set up a home network. Most people here the word "network" and the first thing to come to mind is something like this
However it is very easy. Just follow these simple steps:
1. You will need to make sure each computer has an Ethernet card. If you look on the back of your computer there should be a plug that looks like a phone jack, just slightly larger. (Most newer computers will come with one.) If you don't have one you can pick one up for around $20 at any computer store.
2. You will need a Cable/DSL Router. These can also be picked up at any computer store for around $80.
3. Then you need to run a cable from the modem to the modem port on the router. Then from each out port to the computers you want to connect to the internet. Here is a picture of a hooked up router. (Yours may not look exactly the same.)
The blue wire is coming from the modem and the white ones are going out to separate computers. Each router will come with instructions for how to install it, because everyone is different.
4. After all hardware is installed you need to configure Windows. Open [My Network Places] and click on [Setup home of small office network]
5. Then just follow the prompts. One thing to remember is when it ask you how the computer connect to the internet make sure you click on [This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway.]
6. You be asked what you want to name your network. It does not matter what you name it just make sure it is the same for every computer on the network.
7. Last when you are done restart your computer. Then repeat for each computer on the network.
