This is a page about how to do genealogy. I have been doing genealogical research for about 10 years. The first step in beginning your own research is to start with what you know. Start with yourself, your parents, grandparents etc. Ask them if you can see the family Bible. Sometimes people will record births, marriages and deaths somewhere in the Bible.

You will need to get organized because you will acquire a lot of paperwork. There are two different types of sources. There are Primary sources and Secondary sources.

PRIMARY SOURCES: Death records, Birth Records, Marriage Records, Etc. The reason that they are the primary source is because it a vital record. Death records, Birth records, Marriage records because they contain (at times) the names of the parents, place of event, and an MD or midwife's signature.

SECONDARY SOURCES: Events in a person's life that needs to be verified. The local library is always willing to help. The local LDS Church will order microfilm for you for a small cost. Good sources to check and obtain are the Census records, city directories, Historical Societies. Census Records are good because they let you know if someone else was living with them at the time of the Census Taking. City directories are good because they let you know where they lived and the job that they had.

Sometimes you will hit a brick wall and seem that you will never get the information: be persistant and patient and you will eventually find it.

Genealogy is a project that can take years. Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
