Labor Camp Twilhaar 1940-1945

near Nijverdal, in the province of Overijssel in The Netherlands

This site is about a labor camp in Nijverdal during World War II. In 1942 nearly hundred jewish men from Groningen, Amsterdam and Brabant were forced to work here, until they were deported to camp Westerbork and just a short time later to camps like Auschwitz and Sobibor.

Just a few of these jewish men survived the holocaust. Most of these survivors didn't return to their hometowns but emigrated to countries like Israel or the United States.

So many years after the war, the existance of Camp Twilhaar seems to vanish in people's minds. Just a few Nijverdal people back then in 1942 knew about this camp, fewer remember it now. In history-books on Nijverdal during World War Two this camp is hardly mentioned.

Please take a look at the photographs taken in 1942 in this Nijverdal workcamp:

If you recognize any of these men or if you have information about camp Twilhaar, please contact us. Also please visit the page with the names found so far (in Dutch).
We're considering publishing a book about what happened in the forests near Nijverdal during World War II and we hope your information is in time to be printed.

On October 2nd 2003 a monument to remember these men was revealed at the site of the former workcamp. About 250 guests from all over the Netherlands were present that day.
