The Independents - Gabe's Oasis (Iowa City, IA)
September 18, 2005
After three years of waiting for them to come back to Minneapolis… I gave up.  I got in my car and drove five hours to Iowa City, IA to see them.  Was it worth the wait?  Yes!  Was it worth the drive?  Yes.  Who are they?  They are The Independents.  Hailing from the back woods of South Carolina, they bring together a little bit of a lot of styles to form near perfection.  Ska, punk rock, horror movies, and even Elvis Presley are combined into one concise package.  How could you go wrong with a combination like that?  You just can't.  They satisfy so many different tastes that there should be something for everyone.  With this broad spectrum covered, I cannot begin to explain why there were so few people at the show.  Of course, that did not stop the band from putting on a fantastic show.  The number of people at the show just didn't seem to matter to them.  They played as though there were hundreds, maybe thousands, of screaming fans there just to see them.  The energy put out by the band was enough to wake the truly dead.  Which was actually quite surprising considering that they just drove in from Columbus, OH after playing two shows with The Queers.  Evil has this habit of getting off the stage and trying to engage the audience on a very personal level.  However, this audience just didn't seem to want to be involved.  But, that did not stop him from trying.  Willy B was as intense as I remembered him to be from three years ago.  Playing as if each and every chord was the most important one ever.  Love songs, fun songs, and drunk songs, all done with great flair.  This band is one never to be missed!  They put their black hearts and evil souls into the whole show with such a passion that one cannot help but be drawn into the abyss of their dark existence.  Even if it is only for a short time, it really is a fun place to visit.  ©2005 Krusty
The Queers - Gabe's Oasis (Iowa City, IA)
September 18, 2005
After driving all day from Columbus, OH where they had just played two nights with old friends being taped for a live DVD, one would expect The Queers to be tired.  Well, if they were, it sure did not show on stage.  This was by far one of the most energetic Queers shows I have ever seen.  By the time they took the stage, I have to tell you that even I was starting to get tired (and I only drove five hours).  The energy radiating from the front of the room ran through me like electricity.  It seemed to have the same effect on the rest of the people in attendance as well.  The crowd gravitated toward the stage within the first couple of songs as though drawn by a giant unseen magnet.  The Queers were in top form as they ran through a blistering set filled with hits.  Kids sang along with each and every song.  It was such fun to see this.  Of course it is always fun to see The Queers.  Although there have been many different incarnations of them, the sound remains constant.  Joe's voice is the thing that holds The Queers together.  His is a voice that is unmistakably The Queers.  Ranging from melodic (Punk Rock Girls) to angry (I Hate Your Fucking Guts) to everything in between, his voice is one of the best suited for punk rock that I have ever heard.  After almost an hour and a half, and at least four 'this is our final song' songs, I knew that the show had to end.  I can't say that I wanted it to, but at least it left me wired up enough to drive home.  ©2005 Krusty
