Amalasa and Green Estukoth

"Estukoth!" Amalasa exclaimed, breathless
as she raced after her dragon. The green had grown from a clumsy little
green hatchling into a graceful weyrling so suddenly that Amalasa had been
shocked the day that Estukoth beat her, instead of herself beating Estukoth,
to the weyrbowl for training.
Come on Amalasa!
We're late! The green replied in a mirror
of what Amalasa had used to say to Estukoth every day on the way to Weyrling
training. Of coarse, the never ended up late except for one unmemorable
time, but every day they went through the same panic. Amalasa gasped as
she watched her green suddenly spread her wings and rise from the ground.
She was flying!
"Estukoth!"
She cried again, this time in awe. Her green had flown for the first time!
Perhaps this meant in weyrling training they would be learning to fly soon!
As Amalasa scrambled
down to the weyrbowl, she found her green dragon, and the dragons of many
others, allready there.
"Hmm." The weyrling
master was saying. "It seems we are ready to fly today." That got several
excited whoops from the riders all ready there, including Amalasa. She
could hardly wait.
Deadglow appeared with the letter a few
days later. Amalasa thought nothing of it, until she tore open the seal
and recognized the handwriting. Gasping, Amalasa almost threw the paper
into the fire without reading the rest of it, but Estukoth stopped her.
What causes
my rider distress? Oh Amalasa, at least read it first. Amalasa
sighed and slowely unfolded the page, trying not to wince at the handwriting
and the name sighned at the bottom.
Dearest Cousin,
Amalasa
snorted at that, but went on.
Dearest Cousin,
Your sister
Nenei and I regret to inform you that since you left home, all has not
been well. Your mother took ill not long after you left. We didn't tell
you, because we didn't want to worry you, and more likely than not she
would get better. Well, she fought it for a good while on and off, and
not long ago we thought she was healthy again. But she took a turn for
the worse, and I am afraid that she is in her deathbead. She told you sister
to send for you, but since she cannot write, I have sent this letter. I
thought you were at Dragon Soul Weyr, but it seems you've moved to Dark
Moon, and Impressed a dragon too! We are happy for you for that, and hope
that this green dragon can transport you home one last time to see your
mother. She wishes very much to see you before she dies, please come home.
your caring cousin,
Paris
Amalasa sank
back into her chair and took a deep breathe. The last thing she wanted
to do was go back there. In fact, she had sworn to herself long ago when
she went to Dragon Soul Weyr that she would never go back to Cold
Rocks Hold. In her life she had been a servant, an apprentice Headwoman,
a Dragonrider, but never would she be a holder.
Paris, her cousin,
was a name she especially wanted to forget. He had been one of the main
reasons she had left the hold and planned never to return. She shuddered,
remembering.
You
don't have to go if you don't want to. Stay here at the Weyr with me, where
you are happy. You can't leave anyway, I'm not fully grown yet.
"No,
Estukoth..I must go. They'll let me."
You
say you must go, yet you dread it.
"Yes,
I do dread it." Amalasa smiled weakly at her lifemate. "But it's something
important." Amalasa did care somewhat about her mother, and even if that
bond was small, she still had to go. Oh, but it disturbed her that Paris
was the one to send the letter. She knew her sister was illiterate, as
she was before she had left the hold, but Paris ought to know that a letter
from him would be ill received. Well, a letter from a man who had tried
to rape her when she was very young would frighten anyone. He did know
that, and that was why he sent it, to frighten her. Well, she was Amalasa
of Green Estukoth, and she was not easily frightened now as she once was.
That's
the spirit. Estukoth replied encouragingly.
whatever
this man did to make you afraid, you are a dragonrider now, you have me.
See if he thinks he can scare you easily. Amalasa,
heartened by her lifemate's words, began working on a return letter. She
was still in Weyrling training, so she couldn't leave just yet. Whenever
they learned how to fly between
she would ask permission to leave.
