Here's what you need to study:

Chapters 1-3 of Short Takes. Remember to read the introductory part of the chapters as well as the essays. Be sure to know all the terms in bold; there will be a few questions on the terms (you'll have to define them, or supply the word for the definition). When reading the essays pay attention to anything that stands out. I won't ask anything obscure, but you still need to read carefully.

In The Elements of Style be sure to read chapters 1 and 2. Pay close attention to numbers (the rules are numbered) 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 21.
