Complaining only keeps your guard from achieving their ultimate best and irritates the hell out of your instructor ... instead set the positive example. Complement the freshman on their good qualities instead of thriving on pointing out their faults.
Tip #2: Always Smile
Smile Smile Smile! Especially during performances unless for some reason your instructor tells you not to. But even at band camp...smile! All those grumpy people will look at you and feel better.
Tip #3: Watch Yourself
Practice in front of some object in which you can see your reflection. For example, some people practice outside and look at themselves using reflections from the windows. This will help you see what you're doing wrong and preventyou from looking at your equipment.
