CQ from VE3....?

Oh Boy! What is that call?

Oh yah, it’s ORC

"Make up your mind" someone replied

"I haven’t got all day"

And "Are you sure you’re ORC

On this world wide field day?"

"Of course" I say with glee

Glancing towards the sign

One of the members handed me

To refresh my muddled mind.

All through the day I yell and scream

Till I’m thoroughly convinced

I never had another call

But VE3 ORC

Disaster strikes there goes Bob’s Rig

It just gave up and died

And just to keep it company

So does Guy’s power supply.

When things go wrong, they will go wrong

Or so states Murphy’s law

And Joe’s Kenwood now follows suit

Sparking to prove that point.

Stubbornly Jack and Joe and Guy

As well as Jamie and I

Refuse to give up and die

In turn we yell into the mic.

While leaving to the other men

The slow and painful task

Of checking out the damaged gear

And see to the repairs.

With Milton there we have no fear

And we have Fred’s expertise

As long as we have men like them

ORC can’t be defeated.

Our throats are dry as the day goes on

And the guys dream of cold beer

While I have visions of the coffee pot

Someone forgot at home.

The lights come on, the sun is down

And now starts the real fun

Of trying to outwit the bugs

As we refuse to run.

We’re down to basics on this day

And rare are the facilities

Biting our lip we cross our legs

Ignoring natures call

Aware of the bloodthirsty fiends

Waiting in bush and field

We chase the deer flies off the key

Repeating our CQ call

The drilling power and giant gear

Of the mosquitoes up here

Would put to shame all of the Texas gear

Drilling for oil out there.

And I swear, I saw the blackflies grin

Every time I’ve made the trip

When nature’s call became too shrill

And stronger than my will.

CQ Field day, CQ... CQ...
