Vocations!

We need great priests, deacons, sisters, and brothers!  There are even a growing number of people who serve the Church single, as consecrated virgins.  Men and Women were never meant to be old maids or bachelors.  Those people, I humble believe, never found their true calling.

Though Gary and I were in a great relationship, we still remained open to God, should He call us to serve in the religious life.  We fostered our spiritual life as a couple by going to Mass together, praying together, and studying apologetics when we can remember!  But we also had separate spiritual lives, which we encouraged each other to strengthen.  And now that we’re living single again, we’re open to God’s call as strongly as ever.

If you have ever considered or felt God calling you to a religious vocation or to the single laity, the most important thing is to pray that you stay open to hear God’s will.  Strengthen your prayer life by introducing yourself to prayers such as the Liturgy of the Hours, and/or daily Mass.  Make time to see and visit various religious orders.  Talk to them and visit for a few days.  Find someone you trust and who is an authority figure to be a spiritual director.

I once asked a Sister how she knew she was called to be a nun.  She smiled and said, “You know.”  To find true happiness, we must find the calling we were made for.  When we find that calling, we will know.  It may not be easy, whatever it is, but God will be with us every step of the way, and will not let us fail.
