Going up the La.1 Bridge from Simmesport you become aware that you are crossing a pretty big river. The shot below is looking downstream where the river flows to I-10 and then down to Morgan City and the Gulf. |
These two pictures were taken by my grandson as we crossed the bridge. He accidently took some movies which are really good. Below is looking upstream, and, what is that out there? A train bridge. Exploring La.418, waiting at the base of the bridge, would have to wait longer. Off to the R.R. Bridge. |
I had been told that the Simmesport Railroad Bridge had been used by La. Highway 1, also. Here was the proff. Below is Old One approaching the bridge. How was "right of way" deterimined? |
I'm glad there was the "No Treaspassing" sign. I would have been out on the bridge which would have summoned a train to immediately appear. |
I snuck up to peer over the edge. |
I backed away. |
Bridges are art. Some good, some bad. The old train bridges are majesty in metal. |
See them before they are gone and cement takes their place. |
Time to go, leaving this monument to man's ability to produce beauty and function in the same stroke. There's more of the same "beautiful function" down the road. |
