Longfellow-Evangeline State Park
The park is tucked into the hedges that line La.31 on the left as you enter St. Martinville from the north. You can miss it.  You can forget about it. You can take it for granted and dismiss it. All of that would be a mistake.
I was talking to the the very knowledgable guide at the plantation house and he asked me where I lived. I told him near Breaux Bridge, and, what my mission was being there. I also told him how I had just ignored the place because, I guess, it was right here and I figured it always would be and I could come
when I got around to it.  Oops, that phrase reflects a personal flaw.  He said he had been the same way.
My wife was out of town and I'd been on a very long ride the day before with some friends.  I was tired, but the weather was great and I really get the "guilt trip" when I don't take advantage of 78 degrees and low humidity. So, I ended up in St. Martinville and decided to roam the park.  Maybe just a drive through to refresh memories of years ago when we use to launch the boat in Breaux Bridge and ride down the Teche through Parks and picnic on the bank in the park. Great days. But, we got out of boating and haven't paid a visit since. Memories would be only partially refreshed because most has changed.  And, Wow.
The park is about Cajun History and a poem Longfellow wrote about a couple caught up in that history.  It is a looking glass into their world.  I do not know enough nor did I do heavy investigation while at the park which was just an enjoyable outing for me. I didn't feel like being an  investigative reporter on the story behind the park. That's been done and you will be directed to the link where you can immerse yourself to your desired depth.
Picture stollen from the site I'm sending you to at the end of my article. Sorry, no free tickets here.
Captions are going to get real scarce.  This article is just a tease to get you to go there. It is not a freebie school project.  You'll have to do the research yourself.  Ok, I'll tell you a little.  This is the Welcome Center,  that helps?
Within view of the Welcome Center is the Cabin.
