Port Gibson and the Natchez Trace |
Rodney is a motorcycle road. Nothing more needs to be said. Either you understand that term or you don't. Ride it and you will. It takes you into Port Gibson from Windsor Ruins. I got to PG and it was hot and I was tired. I looked around a little, enough to know that a return was mandatory. I saw the sign for Grand Gulf State Park, where I'll stay. It is also where Grant wanted to land, but didn't. He didn't want to get whipped. Johnny Reb was ready. That's why MS put the park there and not at Bruinsburg where he paraded on shore because someone dropped the ball. Of course, that is my very uneducated guess and totally wrong. |
To the right is what the Trace looked like back when. |
And as it is now. Speed limit 50 mph. Have you ever gotten a Federal Ticket. Does that mean the Supreme Court? It is a beautiful road which has many pull offs and attractions. The portion below Jackson is the best, so said. I have done it from the Tennesee border and there are some boring parts. It is over 400 miles long. Let's see at 50 mph, that's 8 hours. No problemo, senior. |
I hate to tell ya'll but I am out of digital room. I have a lot more pictures and information to show you, but then the site would explode. Something has to be done before the big show. There are some great shots of going home, but I can't show you, Ok, one, but that's it. Below are links you must read and maps you must memorize before I come back with the full report. It will be a guided tour of where to go and what to see, road conditions, everything that has to do with Grants invasion and his trip to Vicksburg. No, it won't be a history lesson, the links are for that. The ride report will be just how you can immerse yourself into that time and place. |
