Man's Mark, West of Sunset
Taking La, 182 north out of Sunset, then turning west on La. 358, you end up at Lewisburg. Lewisburg is not on the main road and it shows. 358 turns right and you will see a sign pointing to the left (west). You follow a dark lane into the hamlet, I guess maybe "settlement" would be a better word. I am premature in writing this article, because I don't know the history of Lewisburg. I have done searches for Civil War articles involving the place because there was a large battle near Sunset, and I figured, maybe, Lewisburg was involved. Anyway, the pictures below signify to me that in Lewisburg's "time", things were more prosperous. The place fasinates me because of its "off the beaten path" existance. Your guess is as good as mine on the history of the buildings. I just thought that they were worth preserving in this small way.
If any of you know something about Lewisburg, please put it in the Guestbook. Glo, you know?
I was cruising down one of the roads going west off of La. 182, north of Sunset, and, I came upon this church. Obviously old. But, how old. I don't usually stop and bother people for info, something I should do more. This time, there were four people talking at a shop to the left of the church, so I headed their way. I asked the group how old the church was. The older gentleman replied that he started going to it when he was three. And, now he was seventy six. And, it had been there "a while". The "Latin Mass" thing is just another reminder of the roots of the area.
Sir, your home and grounds are perfect. No doubt, this man and his family strives to keep it that way. Everything was perfect. The barn was perfect. Oops, one of the pickets seems a little crooked. All kidding aside, they were preserving not only the architecture, but a life style. Congratulations.
I suspect this is another example of the country store which bound the little communities together. Walking into a store with wooden floors is special. Over used word but works here. Walmart would have a lot more friends if its floors were wooden. Maybe. Wood meant that you were in someone's home. Sure he sold stuff, but the owner was a member of the community. Not an investor in the community, but a member. If there was a "problem", he would handle it, not some lawyer from out of state.
Don't know about you, but it's time for me to go eat, more on this great riding and exploring area, west of Sunset coming soon. Hit the next button togo to the "Home Page".
