American Indians two-hundred years ago were thought to be animals-having no "soul"-to white Christians who wanted their land; likewise the black slaves to people who used them as beasts of burden. News accounts of the 1998 Matthew Shepard slaying noted he’d been "tied to a fence like a dead coyote," clearly linking hate for the one with contempt for the other.

Until we learn to respect all life-until finally we learn that all life is interconnected (i.e. Elton John’s "circle of life"), we will respect no
life. And, economic or other short-term advantage notwithstanding, we eventually will pay in a very profound way for our contempt.
